Definition
A Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a written document required under WHS regulations for high-risk construction work and increasingly used in cleaning for tasks involving heights, chemicals, electrical isolation or confined spaces.
Why it matters for procurement
If a cleaner is hurt performing a task without a SWMS where one was required, the principal can be prosecuted alongside the contractor. Many large facility owners now request SWMS documentation as a contract precondition.
